The London Sustainable Development Commission (LSDC) was established in 2002 to advise the Mayor of London on making London an exemplary sustainable world city.
The Commission is made up of individual experts from the economic, social, environmental and London governance sectors who give their time voluntarily, promoting sustainable development, embedding sustainability into London wide strategies, and helping make sustainability a meaningful and understandable concept for all Londoners.
London Leaders is an initiative of the LSDC, with the aim to bring together London’s leading lights in sustainability to deliver real change and inspire others to do the same.
To date our London Leaders have retrofitted green roofs, showcased sustainable solutions for the fashion industry, pioneered new approaches to carbon footprinting, transformed London’s waste cooking oil into a resource, established the flourishing London Low Carbon Communities Network and launched the development plans for the world’s most sustainable theatre.
The London Leaders programme was established to catalyse change – the kind of change we need to tackle London’s most ingrained problems. International research, undertaken on behalf of the LSDC, showed that the challenges we face are not solved by governments and corporations alone. They are solved through strong leadership at every level, by people working together and by being empowered to take action. Providing individuals and their communities with the confidence, skills and support to make sustainable changes in their lives can lead to positive change.
Working together and through new partnerships, the Leaders motivate and encourage Londoners to make change happen.
Ultimately, the LSDC aim to provide an independent London voice on matters that relate to sustainable development, and take responsibility for advocating, encouraging, supporting and promoting best practice on sustainable development to all sectors.
With all this in mind, we hope that we can all see and be part of the benefits of living in what the LSDC aims to be a global benchmark sustainable city by 2020.
